A Merry Christmas

I know the last thing on your mind is to check in here, but if you do, this message is for you. If you're new to my site then Merry Christmas and a big thank you too if you've dropped by before.

I hope you can all get to where you want to be this Christmas - safe journeys and have a brilliant new year!

County commissions

Before the year is out I have created two new 'My County' prints in response to people wanting their own county in print having seen them advertised at Pedlars.

Royal Berkshire and Garden of England for Kent are shown above. They will be widely available as a limited edition of 200. If you would like to have your very own county as a print then do contact me.

Birds of a colour

New for 2011 are five limited edition small screen prints. The series is titled Birds of a Colour and features five birds printed in a colour belonging to their name: Red shank, Blackbird, Greenfinch, Blue tit and Grey wagtail.

Rose(y) Nose

We had an open house leading up to Christmas and offered all our guests a signature cocktail called 'Rose(y) Nose'.

For those who like a splash of festive entertaining it is served firstly by coating the rim of the glass in egg white which helps apply crushed pink sugar for that extra sparkle! Next is a generous glug of ginger wine, be it Crabbies or Stones then topped up with a quality sparkling rose wine, cava or champers. The evening flowed very well!

Made in Bristol

I hope you can make it along to this years Made in Bristol Gift Fair at Bristol's Colston Hall, as I'm taking part along with 50 other artists, designers and food producers.

My slot will be on Saturday the 18th December on an upper level above the foyer. It is a fantastic free event for all your Christmas shopping under one, shiny gold roof, so hopefully see you there.

A shop of interest

The Shop of interest is a very new shop that opened in Glasgow, describing itself as a purveyor of arts and interesting things. I can only track them down on the Facebook page and I guess a site will follow.

I am now selling various products in their shop as Glasgow continues to be a hot bed of gift design.

Counter objects

Counter-objects.co.uk is a showcase for product design from some of the world's best known and most highly-regarded designers as well as emerging young talent. They recently launched this spin off retail site and requested to include my Carrier Pigeon bags.

Cards go stateside

Vigo cards, based in New York City, have recently added my foiled bird card series to their online stock. They were established in 1993 and specialise in cards and gift wrap.

Broad as a bean

OK, I know it may have happened during the summer but believe me there's nothing better than a coarse, fresh and lip smacking broad bean bruschetta. It also gives me an opportunity to reminisce, now that the cold snap is setting in.

More Animalphabet

While I work out what the other 23 animals will be here are the first three of my series of Animalphabet cards once more from another position in my house. The are £3.50 each and that comes with an envelope too! If they were involved with Noah they would come in twos, but that is not the case here, for a pack of four they are £12.00.

Brother Farrell in the fold

Thought I'd post a little of what my younger brother John is all about. He is a very gifted illustrator and draftsperson so anyone out there with a pocket full of lucky breaks perhaps you could dig deep.

Yeti and Trooper above, demonstrate John's exquisite hand drawn style.

Print with more views

I enjoyed being involved in my first mini-print exchange at Snap, Bristol, in the summer so much that I decided to print and add four more to the series.

Each print measures 210 mm square and if I get my act together they will be displayed on my home page soon. They are all an edition of 30 at £45 each and I'm sure they'll make a great stocking filler, even if you don't make the slopes this winter!

Art behind the Walled Garden

A selection of work, including my prints, will be exhibited at the Barley Wood Walled Garden Cafe, Wrington, North Somerset. The green light has been given by Bristol Ethicurean and has been curated by Katy Chard who is a printmaker at Snap, Bristol.

Matt and Jack are Bristol Ethicurean who are committed to providing fine tasting food by sourcing ethical and local produce. These two Bristolians have moved their operations to Barley Wood.

Above is one of my new 'Flock' screen prints which will be on show - 'Flight of Swallows'.

H is for Husky

I had to add in a detail of my new series of hand printed cards featuring my Animalphabet. It will take my some time to complete but it will feature more obscure images from the animal kingdom such as the Yellow Fin Tuna and Red Panda and Orka.

Bristol Sky

Back in my hometown and lovin every minute.

Tenderfoot opening

Calling all craft folk in Bristol BS4 or all of Bristol come to think of it - Tenderfoot opened last Saturday 13th and has already created a lot of interest. It's a make and bake kinda of place.

Besides giving life to a previously derelict shop, it is providing a haven for creative workshops for young and old and stocks designs from Brislington's and Bristols creative massive. Tenderfoot can be found at 100 Wick Road, Brislington Bristol BS4 4HF.

See Red Direct

My Carrier Pigeon bags in black and red are now available from Red Direct. They have been selected as part of this Autumn season's new range.

Solo at Centrespace

Thank you to those people who managed to find me at the Centrespace Gallery, Bristol during my solo show. The private view was a highlight during an enjoyable and successfull week and it was good to exhibit back in my hometown.

Fieldnotes Special

I printed an exclusive rerun of my Fieldnotes for Walcot House, a company that designs accessories for contemporary interiors. They were added to a goodie bag at a prestigious design fair.

Tea & Make on Wye

I was invited by sally and Esther of Tea & Make who organised yet another creative gathering on the banks of the River Wye this September, outside the Ye Olde Ferrie Inn.

the rain stayed away enough for us to set out our stalls and make the most of the last summer sunshine. My new 'Seabird' series of limited edition prints are featured below.

My County

Charlie Gladstone of Pedlars, a company that sells home wares and designer gifts, both contemporary and vintage, commissioned me to create an exclusive range of screen prints to sell on-line and at various outlets.

'My County' is currently available in editions of 20 as Dorset/Thomas Hardy, Devon/Cream Teas, Somerset/Cider and Cornwall/Land's End.

Edinburgh Art Fair

Smithson Gallery, Bristol will be representing and exhibiting my work at this year's Edinburgh Art Fair from the 18th to 21st November on stand E7.

This year promises to be better than ever with the highest quality and most eclectic range of original art ever to have been seen in Scotland's capital city.

A is for Animalphabet

I recently hand printed at Spike Island, Bristol the first three cards of my new Animalphabet series. I chose a selection of animals with a winter connection as we approach Christmas and the card/gift buying season. The same images will be available as prints in 2011.

Front Room

If you're wondering what to do before the Christmas rush, why not get out and about and visit Bristol's oldest open house art trail this November.

I will be part of the Front Room trail in its 10th year at 84 St Lukes Crescent, Totterdown along with Lucie Sheridan. We will be opening on Friday 19th from 6pm and over the weekend 12pm to 6pm.

Cover Glory No.2

The second of my blog shorts, that celebrate the artistic beauty of the paperback cover, is one of a series of Penguin Modern Poets. This volume 2 represents work by three contemporary poets - Amis, Moraes and Porter, first published in 1962.

For Penguin Germano Facetti commissioned a series of photograms by Peter Barrett, Roger Mayne and Alan Spain between 1962 and 1965.

In-flight screening

New work, in the form of large screen printed birds and trees, have been printed at Spike Island, Bristol. They will be part of my one-man show at the Centrespace Gallery, Bristol this coming September and are available now as limited edition of twenty.

The main body of work is a series of three large format screen prints entitled 'Flight'. All have been printed using individual Lascaux metallic inks onto Fabriano Artistico paper and measure 66cm by 86cm.

Cover Glory No.1

This is the first in a series of blog shorts that lets you know what I've found on my travels and helps celebrate the art of the paperback cover.

My Cover Glory No.1 is 'Moominsummer Madness' by the famous Tove Jansson. It is a Puffin Book published by Penguin Books and is a 1977 reprint, first editioned in 1955.

The resourceful Moomin family are flooded out of their old home, but readily take to life in a floating theatre instead. This is the fourth adventure in Tove Jansson's famous Moomin series.

Meet Gerald

I haven't gone soft just plush! He's a lion, he was a gift from my girlfriend and his name is now Gerald and he has been handmade by Jess French at All Creatures Great and Sewn.

Jess is a general crafter addicted to sewing, crochet and knitting and helped bring Gerald into this world.

Pigeon Do!

Frank in Whitstable, Kent are showcasing an in-store event based on everything designed they can gather to do with the much loved/hated pigeon.

I have been invited to stock a variety of my products including Pigeon T-shirts, cards, badges, limited edition prints and one-off, white pigeon poo decals...if they make an impact then I may consider adding them to my existing range.

The show should commence on Wednesday 28th April, so make a trip to the seaside and love the pigeon!

Living Etc

A framed example of my limited edition tree prints is featured in May's issue of Living Etc. They have used a window mount and Ikea frame to best show the image 'Last Stand' which is a popular land mark on top of Kelston Hill overlooking Bath.

Boots and buoys

I spent my Easter break in Pembrokeshire. For those who are not familiar with this wonderful part of the world, it's as far south west as one can ravel - where the ravens croak and the peregrines are masters of the coastal skys.

West and East Angle Bay, either end of Angle village, are the jewels for me and what better way to spend a bank holiday weekend than hunting for sea glass, feeling the breeze, smelling the sea and downing a pint of Single Dragon.

Studio photography

I had recently been commissioned to photograph Bristol's screen printing cooperative, Snap studio. They are currently redesigning their website and this was an opportunity to provide new and up-to-date imagery while capturing the character and essence of this creative space.

Fancy that...

The 'Pop up shop' private view is soon upon us and I managed to hand print four designs that will go on sale during the five day event run by the Poundshop team.

The designs are four post cards printed onto recycled and found card. Each card can be sent and poses something to do - fancy a night out or takeout for example. Why not turn up at the event, buy one and get something started!

Squabble of Seagulls

A Squabble is one noun given to a group of seagulls and is the latest in my range of self-adhesive vinyl declas.

They are very striking, expertly cut from gloss, mirror silver vinyl. Try applying them to an interior window so they will be seen against a bright blue sky!
